Quan Y Cave or Military hospital cave is located on Cat Ba Island, in Cat Hai Island district, Hai Phong City. The cave is located in Hung Son cave, 13 km from Cat Ba town.
In the past, the cave was named Hung Son, which is the name of a general of the Tran dynasty who participated in the battle on the historic Bach Dang river, who discovered the cave. Now called Quan Y cave because, during the American War, people built a hospital with hundreds of hospital beds in the cave.
We went from Calypso Cruises of Oriental Sail Company to visit Military hospital cave from Gia Luan ferry. To visit the cave, the best way to travel from Gia Luan ferry is by car, which takes about 30 minutes. The car goes on a beautiful and unique road, on the sides covered with a green of trees and mountains.

From the driveway, go about 50 meters you will see the cave door. The cave door is made of iron and steel alloy, which has been used for many years but is still very durable.
In American War, around 1960s the cave was built into a hospital for wounded soldiers and sheltering place to stay away from bombings for local people as well as people from nearby Bach Long Vy island. Tourists were surprised by the grand scale of a field hospital in the mountains.

The cave was built with reinforced concrete structure, the length between the two caves about 200 meters, designed to have the front door in the west and back door facing east. Over three thick layers of the entrance door is the hospital with 3 floors, of which 1st floor is the main area with 14 function rooms such as operating rooms, waiting rooms and medicinal room, 2nd floor is cinema and practice room, fitness test, 3rd floor is the reception, rooms for guards and officers. Built as a hospital of wartime, Military Hospital cave is equipped with a system of entrances and exits, drainage, ventilation,…
The cave has a special structure with stalactites and coastal limestone mountains formed by sediments. Besides, sparkling stalactites are blessed by nature, along with the light in the cave, creating a mysterious and romantic space. The ceiling is quite high, creating a sense of ventilation and spaciousness.
The light is just enough for moving. When looking into the cave, with its scale and design, visitors often envision it as a hospital for wartime rather than a cave inside the mountain. After the war, every time there was a storm, people here also chose cave as a shelter. Today, the hospital is gone, but the historical value of the cave remains. Not only that, in the cave there is much evidence of a heroic time.
