Calypso junk is part of the Oriental sails company but there is quite a difference between all the boats available sailing from Ha Long Bay. We chose Calypso after checking out quite a few boats and based on the recommendation of the place we were staying (May De Ville backpackers) and how much we wanted to pay (around $300 per person for 3 days, 2 nights) the Calypso was a great choice. Unfortunately the Vietnamese govt have forced all boat operators to paint their boats white now, so gone are all the colourful junks. Saying that, some of the junks still look pretty good. The interior of Calypso is excellent and the room we had was quite spacious for a boat this size. Some other reviews say the rooms were small but unless your on a big cruise boat or private yacht I think they are being unrealistic and haven’t travelled on boats much. The air con in all the rooms double as heaters which was good as northern Vietnam was unseasonably cold in January.
The best thing about Calypso though has to be the food. Everyone on the boat was pleasantly surprised by the quality and volume of food. The cocktails were also excellent and the staff onboard went to great lengths to make the trip as enjoyable as possible.
My recommendation would be to stay the 2nights/3days. It’s a 4hr ride to and from Hanoi to ha long so to get the most out of the boat and get to see the amazing caves, have a decent amount of time kayaking and chilling on the boat/beach then you need to stay 2nights. Last recommendation if sunshine is important to you dont go in dec/jan, it was still pretty dry and atmospheric but the boats sun deck would be very cool in warmer weather.
