Again, we would like to thank you for your joining our boat and have good impression on our services.
My friends and I had a wonderful two night stay on the Calypso on Halong Bay. This trip was made possible by Cham and her husband Tran at Halong Sapa Tours,Hanoi. I would highly recommend that you contact them if you are considering a trip to Halong Bay.
I came across the link to their services when planning my trip from the US. After a few email exchanges it became apparent that Cham was very informative and attentive. She was extremely helpful in narrowing down the choices of junks and making our final choice of the Calypso. – What was most amazing, however, was her help in booking our train to Sapa. I emailed asking for guidance in how I could make a train reservation to Sapa from the US, as I was having trouble with it. She emailed back that she would make the reservations for me…at no charge. — When my friends and I arrived in Hanoi, her husband greeted us at our hotel. We finalized reservations and he guided us to our train to Sapa (although this technically was not even part of their service), picked us up at 4AM (!!) on our return, took us to their house for rest, showers. Cham cooked us breakfast and we were taken to the transport to Halong Bay. Such service is unbelievable! All of this was at no extra charge. — When we returned from our trip and were preparing to leave Hanoi, Tran, the husband, met us at our hotel to say good-bye. — I HIGHLY recommend their services.
We were also happy with the choice of the Calypso as a moderately priced option. The look of the outside of the boat led us to wonder about the boat, but once on board, we found very nice rooms and bathrooms. The service of the staff was good, and the activities were well-run. The food was satisfying. We were looking for a medium sized junk with a variety of activity options (kayaking, cooking class, Tai Chi, hiking). The Calypso provided all of this.
All in all, we were very happy with our experience from start to finish.
I recommend two nights. It allows you to relax, get further into the bay, have a richer experience with more activities. People on our boat who had to leave after one night were regretting their choice.
We have just spent a weekend on the Calypso and would recommend this company and their boat. Lovely clean, spacious accomodation with en suite, great staff, great food and a well organised tour from start to finish. The bus from Hanoi takes 31/2-4 hours but it is airconditioned and well worth it. We felt 1 night was enough to see Halong bay but you can do 2 nights. Try not to go at the weekend if you can as the bay is very very busy.
We were a bit skeptical after reading so many negative reviews but this cruise was great. The staff, while having a hard time communicating in English, tries very hard and does an excellent job, especially the food. Can’t say enough about the food. About every 3 hours or so, the chef serves several courses with each one better than the last. We traveled for about 2 weeks throughout Vietnam but we think this cruise had the best food we had.
We took the 2 day/1 night cruise which is probably the best choice. The boat visited a large cave, a floating village, and a kayak rental place. These stops were great but just the view and experience of the bay itself is what the cruise is about. I should say that we are a young couple and most of the other passengers were as well. I’m not sure if the cruise would be as enjoyable for other demographics.
Definitely would recommend!
“Calypso Cruiser – Oriental Sails – We could not have had a better experience!”
I had emailed the folks at Oriental Sails directly based on a recommendation from an acquaintance. I explained that my wife and I were travelling for a year-long honeymoon, and we were lucky enough to have my parents with us in Vietnam for the month of Feb. We were looking for a boat which was fun, yet professional… karaoke until dawn and beer pong isn’t really our style. We wanted my folks feeling comfortable, and didn’t mind paying for it.
Responses were always prompt and we were assured a great time for both us and our parents.
The ride from Hanoi to Halong was easy, and we were transferred from the van to the boat taxi within 3 minutes of arriving. The boat taxi then took us to the Calypso Cruiser – our home for the next 2 nights, a beautiful boat with a max capacity of 24.
Every meal was incredible. We all tried seafoods we never normally eat (mussels and squid) and felt very comfortable doing so. Food was delicious in taste and mind-blowing in presentation.
The guides and staff were amazing. Anything we needed, no problem!
On the second day we were transferred to a smaller boat and then taken out for as much kayaking as we wanted. I know some people complain that this boat isn’t as nice as the Calypso, and it isn’t….but if most of your day is spent kayaking or rock climbing (the other option) what does it matter? Again, it was still clean, and the staff and meals were fantastic!
The kayaking was some of the best I have ever done – although I would have loved to go climbing too…maybe next time.
During the second evening, the staff asked for every ones attention and then presented my wife and I with a cake and a small gift for our honeymoon. It was a very thoughtful and generous gesture…
I would very highly recommend Calypso Cruiser if you are taking in Halong Bay. I would strongly advise you to book 3-day, 2-night. I cannot imagine how quick our trip would have been over if we had only booked 1-night.
Just one heads up…do not bother bringing your own booze aboard…there is a pretty hefty service charge, and for that short of time it just isn’t worth it…beers are still only $2-$2.50…
Enjoy your cruise!
